"Take a seaside location, add a colony of gulls and the alphabet, and the result is a clever abecedary . . . [Kids will] get a kick out of these goofy gulls."
Debut author-illustrator Rand casts dozens of seagulls in a variety of roles in this alphabetic (and highly alliterative) outing, working in a crisp-edged style that resembles cut-paper artwork. Whether “having an afternoon adventure in an airplane” or taking “a trip around town in a tugboat,” the lanky seagulls, who look at readers with deadpan expressions, are an active bunch (“Vail and Varney value their vacation playing volleyball”). An author’s note explains that the seagulls are named after islands in Maine (except for the Q, U, and X entries), where the author lives, a detail that her fellow Mainers are likely to appreciate.
Peaks Island Author-Illustrator Beth Rand Debuts ABC Gulls
Yarmouth, Maine (March 7, 2017)—Did you know? Maine seagulls are known for their stellar personalities and savvy way with words, as evidenced in ABC Gulls, by author and illustrator Beth Rand.
The whimsical children’s alphabet book, which will be released on March 28, features a cast of seagulls, from Admiral to Zeke, chronicling scenes from everyday island life. Little ones can start by learning letters and move up to sounding out individual words. Early readers will enjoy reading full sentences, and parents and grandparents will have fun reading the book out loud.
All are invited to join Rand to celebrate the launch of her book on Thursday, April 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Arabica Coffee House, 9 Commercial Street, Portland. There will be a coloring activity for children, a book signing, food and drink, and a Sea Bags bucket bag raffle, which will include the book and other good things from the talented Peaks Island author. The event is free and open to the public.
Advance praise is already coming in for ABC Gulls. Kirkus Reviews says, “Take a seaside location, add a colony of gulls and the alphabet, and the result is a clever abecedary . . . [Kids will] get a kick out of these goofy gulls."
ABC Gulls is Beth Rand’s first book. In addition to writing and illustrating, she is a self-taught artist, avid photographer, wife, and mother of three, who has called Maine home for 40 years. Rand also owns an online shop, Beth Rand Designs, where she sells home goods, greeting cards, art prints, and T-shirts that feature her signature coastal style.
Islandport Press will also be publishing a 2018 desktop calendar, Sun. Salt. Happy., from Rand, featuring the same playful seagulls in the book. The calendar is scheduled to come out in June.
