The Cat at Night, originally released in 1969, depicts, on pages that alternate between bright colors and dark night scenes, the journey of a farmer's cat as it walks from the farm to the city, along a highway and through fields, farms, and forests.
The beautifully illustrated classic was chosen in 2008 by Maine's pro-literacy Maine Reads organization for its Read With ME program. For that project, Islandport Press created a special softcover edition that was distributed to each kindergarten pupil in Maine in the fall of 2008, but was not for sale. In 2009, Islandport released a hardcover edition making The Cat at Night available to the public for the first time in decades.
EXCERPT “
The cat can see at night. The sky is dark and full of stars, but everything else
is like day to him. He can see the dog sleeping in the doghouse and the doves
asleep on the dovecote.
But the cat doesn't feel like sleeping. Night is the best time of all the
time when he likes to go exploring.”
