Veteran writer and editor to help guide expansion of book publisher
Veteran writer and editor Genevieve A. Morgan will join Islandport Press as a senior editor who will oversee acquisition of specialty, nonfiction, and fiction books and guide the development of gift products as the Maine-based publisher increases the number of books it publishes and expands into new markets and formats.
Morgan, who lives in Portland, has worked extensively in the publishing and writing industry, serving as managing editor at SF Magazine, associate editor at Mercury House Publishing, and managing editor at Chronicle Books in San Francisco. She has also worked as a book packager, editorial consultant, and radio producer.
"The energy and commitment that Islandport Press has had and continues to show for its authors and their books was an instant draw for me. Here is a company that sees opportunity where others see crisis, and stories instead of trends," Morgan said. "I am thrilled to become a part of such a vibrant and multi-faceted group."
Morgan joins Islandport Press as the publishing company prepares to celebrate its 15th Anniversary in 2014. In advance of that milestone event, the company is doubling the number of printed books it publishes and expanding into new markets and formats. In November, the company will launch the initial phase of a multi-stage overhaul of its website, social media presence, and technological capabilities that, when completed in 2014, will make it an industry leader.
"We are committed to the book business and excited about the future, despite obvious challenges in the industry," said Dean L. Lunt, publisher of Islandport. "It is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring in someone of Genevieve's experience and talent to help us plan and execute our plans for the future. There is no question that with Genevieve joining Senior Editor Melissa Kim and our other existing staff, we now have a dynamic editing team that is comparable to any publisher regardless of size or location."
Morgan is the second significant hire for Islandport this fall. In September, Islandport added freelance writer and popular family blogger Jennifer D. Hazard as an assistant editor who will work directly with authors and resellers on events and will focus on increasing the company's social media presence.
Morgan has also written more than a dozen books and has written for many publications, including Maine Magazine, SF Magazine, and Body & Soul Magazine. She earned her bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College. From 2008 to 2012, she served as Board President of The Telling Room, a non-profit writing center in Portland, Maine.
