About this Book:

A Blanding's Turtle ventures across streams, over roads, and through wetlands to find food and a safe nesting place in this fascinating and educational board book. Readers will join the intrepid turtle as she travels, facing some unexpected challenges along the way. Through a simple narrative with beautiful illustrations, young readers will learn about the Blanding's Turtle’s behaviors and habitat, threats to its survival, and respectful human interaction to help conserve this rare endangered species. This is the third in a four-part series of board books done in partnership with Maine Audubon, following A Snowy Owl Story and A Little Brown Bat Story.

The third book in a “Wildlife on the Move” partnership between Islandport Press and Maine Audubon is wonderful. A Blanding’s Turtle Story, written by Melissa Kim and illustrated by Jada Fitch, will capture the imagination of your kids, grandkids, and you too!

Kim's storyline is simple and easy to follow. She answers the questions kids would typically have about a Blanding's Turtle. What does the turtle do all day? What places are safe for a turtle? When should a human move a turtle if found in the road or the woods? Jada Fitch's illustrations are beautiful. The colors are soft yellows and greens that beg a closer look to uncover details like polliwogs and sunlit spaces [. . .] The message about humans is subtle, but provides a great place to start an environmental discussion early on with the generation who will need to care for our world as well.

Islandport Press Partners with Maine Audubon to Bring the Outdoors into Classrooms

In 2014, Islandport Press launched a partnership with Maine Audubon to publish a series of children’s books that will help increase awareness about endangered species while raising funds for underserved schools. Proceeds from the Wildlife on the Move series go to helping improve education for Maine children, but that’s not the only way this series is reaching kids. The program is also meeting children in their natural habitats by visiting classrooms across the state.

Melissa Kim, children’s and young adult book editor at Islandport Press and author of the Wildlife on the Move series, has accompanied staff from the Maine Audubon Society on school visits where they speak to the kids about the biological facts of owls and bats. Along with Maine Audubon educator Kim Sanders, Melissa Kim visited schools in Lincolnville, Appleville, and Hope, bringing a box filled with science artifacts. The educational kits features a jumbo-sized version of either A Snowy Owl Story or A Little Brown Bat Story (and launching this Saturday: A Blanding's Turtle Story) plus animal skeletons, droppings, and other educational materials to help illustrate the concepts in the books.
