Emily Chetkowski

Emily Chetkowski

Emily Chetkowski was a long-time summer resident of the island of Islesboro, Maine, where her dog Mabel took a now-famous solo ferry ride across the bay to Lincolnville Beach that inspired Chetkowski’s first book, Mabel Takes the Ferry. Since that book, she has written six additional children’s books, including Mabel Takes a Sail and Mabel Takes a Paddle.

“One day, our dog Mabel took her famous unauthorized trip on the Islesboro Island ferry, ending up at a lobster restaurant on the mainland. That event is what inspired me to become a published author,” Chetkowski writes on her website. “I thought, this is such a funny story; I should share it with children everywhere. And I did.”

Chetkowski grew up in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and now resides on a farm in southern New Hampshire with her sweetheart George. The couple raise rare Newfoundland ponies. Chetkowski also visits schools and writes a monthly “slice of life” column in the Monadnock Ledger Transcript.
