Dirigo Speaks to celebrate John Holyoke's first book

Yarmouth, Maine (September 23, 2019)—Long-time Bangor Daily News columnist John Holyoke will celebrate the release of his first book, Evergreens: A Collection of Maine Outdoor Stories, at Dirigo Speaks with a campfire chat about the Maine outdoors with his friend and fellow outdoorsman, Matthew Dunlap.

The free event will take place on Tuesday, October 22 at Bangor Arts Exchange, located at 193 Exchange Street in Bangor from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The discussion will be led by Dunlap, who is also Maine Secretary of State. Admission is free. Books will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of The Briar Patch, or they can be purchased in advance with a reserved ticket through Eventbrite.

In Evergreens, Holyoke shares a curated collection of essays featuring people who are passionate about the outdoors, as well as his memorable encounters with creatures—from salmon to deer to moose to squirrels—that fascinate and confound him. Sprinkled throughout are memories of the events that have shaped him as he recounts the benefits of spending time with friends in the woods, fields, and waters of Maine. As Holyoke says, “I am here to take you on an adventure. Along the way, you’re welcome to laugh, cry, or smile, or reach for the phone to call an old friend and tell them that they still matter.”

Dirigo Speaks is a speaking series put on by the Bangor Daily News with the goal to inform, empower, and connect. This evening of the series is sponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

After its release on October 22, Evergreens will be available at bookstores and gift stores across Maine and online from publisher Islandport Press at
