Islandport Magazine to debut November 20


Yarmouth-based book publisher Islandport Press is pleased to announce that on November 20 it will officially launch Islandport Magazine, a quarterly publication devoted to stories from across the length and breadth of Maine and New England.

In addition to featuring book excerpts and stories that strike similar themes to the company’s award-winning books, the 72-page color magazine will serve to highlight the talents and personalities of Islandport authors, illustrators, and photographers.

 “At heart we are storytellers,” said Dean Lunt, who worked as a journalist in New England before founding Islandport Press in 1999. “Islandport Magazine provides us with another publishing channel to tell stories and to better explore the people and places of our region while also giving us an important vehicle to shine a brighter light on our books and on our talented authors and illustrators, something that is increasingly difficult today for a small book publisher.”

The magazine is being developed in partnership with MaineToday Media, Maine’s largest media company, which will manage all advertising and will serve as a critical distributor of the print publication through its newspapers. Each quarter, Islandport Magazine will be included as a free insert in the Maine Sunday Telegram, initially to targeted zip codes in the greater Portland area but then expanding its reach with successive issues. The first issue of the magazine will be included as part of the November 20 edition of the Sunday newspaper.

“It is a natural fit for MaineToday Media to manage the advertising sales and assist in the distribution of Islandport Magazine,” said Lisa DeSisto, CEO of MaineToday Media.   “Our sales team was eager to put this new opportunity in front of marketers who want to reach our audience in a glossy magazine format. While only a select group of our subscribers will receive the first issue, we are excited to expand distribution in 2017.”

Islandport Magazine will also be mailed to Islandport’s existing customer list of several thousand people and will be distributed free at a growing number of stores and shops statewide. Islandport is pursuing additional distribution partnerships that would increase the presence of the printed magazine in all parts of Maine and into New England. 

The magazine features profiles, photo essays, original fiction, and book excerpts, as well as stories on such topics as sports, business, music, history, arts, and culture. The premier 72-page issue includes an essay by popular Maine novelist Cathie Pelletier, a feature story on artist Dahlov Ipcar by Press Herald arts reporter Bob Keyes, an original short story by Jim Nichols, and a Katy Kelleher story on novelist and historian Ardeana Hamlin (Hamlin’s classic novel Pink Chimneys turns 30 this year), as well as photography by Kevin Bennett, Nicole Wolfe, and Paul Cyr.

 “We are thrilled that we have attracted such talented writers and photographers to Islandport Magazine right out of the gate,” Lunt said. “We strive to showcase their work and dedicate ourselves to journalistic quality that will be, in part, our nod to the wonderful magazines of old that featured interesting, well-written stories as well as brilliant images.”
