Islandport Press signs legendary “Outdoor News”columnist George Smith

Islandport Press will publish A Life Lived Outdoors: Reflections of a Maine Sportsman, a book of collected essays by popular Maine columnist and outdoorsman George Smith, in 2014. The book will capture new material as well as previously published ruminations on family, friends, faith, outdoor fun, and adventure that reflect the broad scope of Smith’s regular weekly columns.

"Working with the dream team at Islandport Press has been great fun," says Smith. “They are both very supportive and very professional. And wading through 23 years of my weekly columns to choose the right ones for this book was like a tour through my entire writing life!"

Smith spent 18 years as the executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, before stepping down three years ago to write full-time. In addition to his weekly editorial page column in the Kennebec Journal and Waterville Morning Sentinel, he writes a weekly travel column in those same newspapers (with his wife Linda), monthly columns in The Maine Sportsman magazine, two outdoor news blogs (one on his website,, and one on the website of the Bangor Daily News), and special columns for many publications and newsletters.

George also hosts, with Harry Vanderweide, a TV talk show called Wildfire, now in its 13th year, which is focused on hunting, fishing, environmental, and conservation issues. The show is owned and produced by Maine Audubon and aired on its website as well as on the Time Warner cable TV station throughout the state.

“Smith is just the kind of multifaceted writer we enjoy working with,” says Genevieve Morgan,  senior editor at Islandport Press. “His humor and experience are a perfect fit. He has a natural flair for storytelling that makes reading even the simplest tale feel like you’re listening in a circle around the campfire.”

A Life Lived Outdoors, Smith’s first officially published collection of essays, will be released on March 7, 2014.
