John Holyoke's "Evergreens" arrives this Fall

08/12/2019

Yarmouth, Maine (August 12)—This fall, Maine-based Islandport Press will publish “Evergreens,” a collection of essays by long-time Bangor Daily News columnist John Holyoke that captures Holyoke’s experiences on the rivers, in the woods, and at the camps of Maine.

Holyoke has worked at the Bangor Daily News for twenty-six years. He followed in the footsteps of two writing legends, Bud Leavitt and Tom Hennessey, when he became the newspaper’s outdoor columnist in 2002. Holyoke immediately began casting the famed column in his image and employing his own storytelling style by writing about his adventures and misadventures as well as touching on personal subjects such as his family and introducing some of his favorite people and characters he has met.

“John is deeply rooted in Maine, but did not grow up a classic outdoorsman,” said Dean L. Lunt, editor-in-chief of Islandport Press. “Rather than the nuts and bolts of hunting and fishing, his columns bring an everyman and often humorous or emotional quality to his adventures in the Maine outdoors. As a writer, he is personally exploring Maine, and wonderfully brings the reader along with him to share his experiences; by doing so, he has become a storyteller in the grand tradition of Maine.”

John was the Maine Press Association Bob Drake Young Writer award winner in 1997 and was named Maine Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 1998.

“Some of the benefits of ‘going outside to play’ for a living is I get to meet amazing people, travel to beautiful and historic places, and share the stories I find with loyal readers,” Holyoke said. “'Evergreens' contains some of the most powerful and inspiring of those tales, along with plenty that were just plain funny and fun to write."

The book is slated for release in October 2019.

Holyoke is a Maine-native who has lived in the Greater Bangor area for most of his life. He graduated from Brewer High School and the University of Maine, where he earned a degree in Journalism in 1993. He lives in Brewer.
