John N. Cole’s “In Maine” Available in Paperback

Yarmouth—The classic In Maine, a brilliant collection of essays by iconic journalist John N. Cole, is back in print for the first time in more than ten years, in time to help the state celebrate its bicentennial.

Maine-based Islandport Press published a revamped hardcover edition of the book in 2001 and has now released a softcover version, making the essays, written in Cole’s signature style, available for another generation.

Ken Allen of The Maine Sportsman once called Cole “the best outdoors writer to ever live in Maine,” while Brian Kevin, editor-in-chief of Down East Magazine, recently said Cole’s essays about community and ecology “were as lyrical, witty, and moving as anything E.B. White ever wrote.”’

“There is no question that Cole belongs in the pantheon of Maine outdoor writers as well as journalists,” said Dean L. Lunt, publisher of Islandport Press. “He wrote beautifully and in an unpretentious way about everyday life and natural events in Maine. He was a great supporter of Islandport Press in its infancy, recognizing, I like to think, a kindred spirit in both a desire to tell stories and capture the wonder that is Maine with both authenticity and voice.”

Cole was the cofounder of the groundbreaking newspaper, The Maine Times, which was a must read in the early 1970s when it served as the leading voice in Maine’s conservation movement and kept close tabs on local and state government.

Cole wrote “John’s Column” for The Maine Times and it was a collection of those columns that was first packaged as a book in 1974. At the direct request of Cole, the out-of-print book was redesigned, expanded, and reintroduced as a new hardcover by Islandport in 2001.

Cole died of cancer in January 2003. He was 79. He left a legacy that includes the John N. Cole Award, which is awarded each year by the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance to a Maine-themed nonfiction book. Cole was a World War II veteran, wrote several other books, including Striper (Lyons, 1978) and was a frequent contributor to national magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, and Field & Stream.
