Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook Set for Release on June 16

More than 200 Local Recipes Help Celebrate Maine’s Culinary Past, Present, and Future

Yarmouth, Maine (May 21, 2020)—The Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook, a testament to home cooking and an homage to the community cookbook tradition of Maine, is scheduled for official release on June 16.

The cookbook, which is being distributed by Islandport Press, features more than 200 family recipes drawn from local sources and range from Margaret Chase Smith Blueberry Muffins to Thai Fiddlehead Stir Fry to Lobster Crab Etouffee. The book also includes family photographs that capture both the joy of cooking and community spirit of the Pine Tree State.

To create the 288-page book, editors Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz, along with Don Lindgren, owner of Rabelais Books, worked for months to collect family recipes, food stories, and photos. Ultimately, they collected recipes and photos from kitchens across the length and breadth of Maine, ranging from everyday families and home cooks to award-winning chefs and notable Mainers.

The goal, in part, was to celebrate the community cookbook, which the editors say is based on three critical elements: A defined community, in this case, the state of Maine; recipes that come from that community; and that it helps raise funds for a cause that benefits the community, in this case, fighting hunger in Maine. Two dollars from every book sold will support organizations fighting hunger in Maine.

Hathaway and Schatz are the author and photographer of five books on food and farming including The Portland Maine Chef’s Table: Extraordinary Recipes from Casco Bay, The New Portland Maine Chef’s Table: Extraordinary Recipes from the Coast of Maine, The Food Lovers Guide to Maine, and The Year of the Goat: 40,000 Miles and the Quest for the Perfect Cheese. Since 2005, the couple has lived with their daughters on Ten Apple Farm, a homestead in southern Maine.
