Maine Guide Earl Brechlin Shares Five Great Hikes

06/13/2016

Registered Maine Guide Earl Brechlin has nearly four decades of experience hiking the Maine woods. Although he was born in Connecticut, Brechlin has deep family roots in Maine. “I got back here as soon as I could,” he said.

Brechlin is the author of four Maine and New England history books, as well as field guides to Maine and Mount Desert Island. In 2016, he will publish yet another book that combines his dual passions for Maine history and the great outdoors. Forever Yours, Bar Harbor (Islandport Press, June 2016) features color postcards from Acadia’s Golden Age, images of the stunning summer “cottages” of yesteryear, and scenes of the natural features that make Bar Harbor a timeless vacation destination.

But Brechlin’s Maine experience isn’t limited to the confines of Mount Desert Island. As a guide, he has tramped all over Maine, hiking between tall pines on the Appalachian Trail and along the sheer peak of Knife’s Edge in Baxter State Park. Below, Brechlin shares his top hiking destinations in Maine, which are sure to inspire any nature lover to get outside and do some walking.
