Portland author and artist celebrate release of new cookbook

"Always in Season" launch set for Aug. 15 at Portland Museum of Art

Have you ever wandered through the farmer's market, or unpacked your CSA box, and wondered just what you should do with all the kale, celeriac, kohlrabi, or rutabaga? Or stared at the produce section of your local grocer, tired of your usual recipes for corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots?

Always in Season: Twelve Months of Fresh Recipes from the Farmer's Markets of New England brings you inviting, approachable, delicious recipes for fresh and flavorful meals, whether you are shopping at the farmer's market, opening your CSA box, browsing at the grocery store, or enjoying a bounty crop of vegetables from your garden.

Join author Elise Richer and illustrator Teresa Lagrange to celebrate the release of their new cookbook on Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portland Museum of Art, Seven Congress Square. The event is co-hosted by the Portland Museum of Art Store and the Portland Museum of Art Cafe. The event will feature a brief talk, book signing, raffle, and light seasonal refreshments. Admission is free.

In this beautifully illustrated cookbook, Richer takes you through each month of the year, highlighting a few select ingredients that are in season each month, and giving you fresh ideas on how to use them. Richer, who lives in Portland, draws upon both her Norwegian heritage and her efforts to please her own family at mealtimes, as well as her professional experience as a commercial baker and bakery owner, to show you how to make the most of what's in season in the Northeast. Dramatic and colorful illustrations by Lagrange, who also lives in Portland, make this a visual feast.

The Portland Museum of Art (PMA), Maine's premier art museum, showcases fine and decorative arts from the 18th century to the present. From Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth to Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet, the PMA features three centuries of art and architecture.
