Sen. Angus King to Publish Book of Images

03/29/2018

Islandport Press announced today that it will publish Sen. Angus S. King Jr.’s A Senator’s Eye, a book of personal photographs that provides a rare insider’s look at the workaday life of the senator, whether attending high-level meetings in Washington, DC, or watching a glorious sunrise off the coast of Maine.

A Senator’s Eye: Celebrating Maine, Washington, and the Joys of Scraping the Windshield, will be officially released in July 2018. The book will also feature a foreword by King’s friend and senate colleague, Sen. Cory A. Booker of New Jersey. By agreement, Islandport Press will direct any earnings King would have received from book sales directly to Good Shepherd Food Bank of Auburn.

"What I try to do with these pictures—and their captions—is to convey a sense of my dual life as both a Senator and an unabashed fan of my beautiful state,” King said. “Each shot tells a small story, sometimes from inside 'the room where it happens' and sometimes standing alone marveling at a Maine sunset. Together, they capture a personal view of places and events from a somewhat unusual vantage point.”

The foundation of A Senator’s Eye is the informal and candid images of King as well as those he has captured on his smartphone. He has posted many of the images to his increasingly popular social media feeds accompanied by his thoughts and observations as a way to directly communicate with constituents. King, a student of history, prides himself on having an eye and an ear for both the historic and the gloriously familiar, be it hosting a bipartisan barbecue as a U.S. Senator, riding the back roads of Maine on his Harley, or waxing poetic about civil war hero Joshua Chamberlain.

“Senator King has a great eye and a true understanding of Maine and the U.S. Senate that is wonderfully grounded and quietly inspiring,” said Dean L. Lunt, Islandport Press publisher and the book’s lead editor. “While each picture alone is but a simple snapshot in time, when strung together they put a remarkably human face on a sitting Senator, and provide a glimpse of a daily life that moves ceaselessly from critical debates on the senate floor, to greeting constituents at summertime parades, to precious moments of contemplation and peace with his wife, Mary.”

King (I-Maine) was elected as an independent to the U.S. Senate in 2012 filling a seat once occupied by Edmund Muskie, George Mitchell, and Olympia Snowe. King also served two terms as the governor of Maine. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia. He has five children and lives in Brunswick, Maine, with his wife, Mary. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the Maine outdoors—either on his Harley or with his family in their camper.
