Three Maine authors will talk about raising outsiders, June 29 at L.L.Bean in Freeport

Every modern parent wants to know: how can they get their kids away from a screen and outside for unscripted play? Three Maine authors will discuss ways to instill in children a love of the outdoors, using all that Maine has to offer, on Friday, June 29, 7 p.m. as part of the L.L. Bean Friday night lecture series.

Authors Jennifer Hazard (The Maine Play Book), Aislinn Sarnacki (Family Friendly Hikes in Maine), and Hope Rowan (Ten Days in Acadia) will discuss where to start, how to make time to get outside, and where to find fun adventures for every age. A question and answer session, and book sales and signing will follow the discussion. Raising Outsiders: How to Get Your Kids Unplugged and Outdoorswill take place in the Atrium in the camping section of the L.L.Bean Flagship Store in Freeport.

The Maine Play Book: A Four-Season Guide to Family Fun and Adventure, by award-winning blogger Jennifer Hazard, is a thoughtfully curated guidebook that gives parents an insider's perspective of Maine. Organized by season, each section features farms, nature preserves, and parks, as well as events and activities for families—from the rugged coast to the northernmost reaches of the state—with travel tips and color photos along the way.

Ten Days in Acadia by Hope Rowan is a kid’s guide to Mount Desert Island, written from a fictional 12-year-old girl’s point of view. Hattie and her family hike ten different trails, discover and observe plants and animals, swim in lakes, and enjoy the occasional ice cream cone, too! By writing Ten Days in Acadia from a fictional kid’s point of view, author Hope Rowan has created a new way to interest kids and get them excited about being outdoors.

Aislinn Sarnacki’s two guidebooks, Family Friendly Hikes in Maine and Maine Hikes Off the Beaten Path, each feature 35 hikes scattered throughout Maine. The guidebooks include in-depth information about each hike, as well as personal stories of her own experiences on the trails and detailed trail maps. The book also features many color photos that Sarnacki took during her adventures.
