Islandport Press is seeking an Assistant Editor who is highly-organized, creative, passionate, and knowledgable about regional publishing. The Assistant Editor will work on administrative, marketing, project management, and editorial tasks in support of the Islandport Publishing Program. The Assistant Editor is involved in a variety of tasks to support the acquisition and development of new books as well as external communications, and sales and marketing activities. Some weekend and night work may be required. This is an onsite job at our office in Yarmouth, Maine.
Job tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manage or help manage book projects through all phases from manuscript to bound book; acquisition, editorial, copyediting, design and production
Read, report on, respond to, and track submissions
Draft jacket, catalog, and promotional copy, and prepare fact sheets with title information for marketing, publicity, and sales departments
Prepare contract requests and process payments
Attend and prepare materials for editorial, marketing, and sales meetings
Participate in brainstorming meetings and share ideas for projects
Data entry tasks
Correspond directly with authors, illustrators, and agents
Track and handle sub-right contracts with Islandport partners
Work in support of distribution partners on marketing and sales
Copy edit and proofread books, editorial content, and marketing materials
Create original content for inside and outside publications
Perform sales and book research
Fact checking and research
Help update Islandport’s website and social media channels, when necessary
The successful candidate will:
Have some book industry or relevant experience
Have some writing and editing experience
Be proficient in Word, Excel, Macintosh software, and Google Workstation
Be passionate about books and the creative process
Be curious about different genres of books
Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills
Be highly organized, capable of multi-tasking, and detail-oriented
Be able to work effectively with colleagues at every level of seniority
Be self-directed and able to work independently
Demonstrate imagination, creativity, and original thinking
Be comfortable using email, calendar management, and file management tools
Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred.

The Islandport Press Editorial Assistant is an entry-level, full time, position responsible for administrative, marketing, and editorial support of the Islandport Publishing Program. The EA is involved in a variety of tasks to support the acquisition and development of new books as well as external communications, and sales and marketing activities, including social media and event planning. Some weekend and night work may be required. This is an onsite job at our office in Yarmouth, Maine.

General
Provide general administrative support, including handling calls and messages and taking book orders.
Perform general office, clerical, and warehouse tasks as needed
Attend and help organize events
Editorial
Copy edit and proofread books, editorial content, and marketing materials
Write and develop book and author-based content for website and external channels
Create original content for inside and outside publications
Perform sales and book research
Plan and create social media content
Fact checking and research
Marketing
Create and manage newsletters
Manage or help develop various marketing materials, including seasonal catalogs
In-house support of sales representative
Serve as an in-house sales contact and provide support for certain retail and sales partners
Write press releases
Help develop book publicity, including review copies and award submissions
Organize and repurpose external publicity
Serve as post-publication author liaison
Support distribution partners post-publication
Manage select databases
Manage events and trade shows
The successful candidate will:

Internships: Summer 2023
For Summer 2023, Islandport Press will again offer a ten-week, in-person internship in the book publishing industry. We look for highly-motivated, organized, enthusiastic individuals who are interested in learning about all aspects of book publishing from editing to marketing to events, and are willing to pitch in wherever the need arises. These are paid hourly positions with set, but somewhat flexible schedules.
Our interns typically work 24 to 30 hours a week from mid-June to mid-August. (Occasionally, we offer shorter internships during spring and fall semesters.) We give preference to college students who will be entering their senior year, but we also consider recent post-graduates as well as younger college students.
For Summer 2023, applications are due by April 7. We will review all applicants and make a final hiring decision by
early May.
Interns at Islandport Press will work in all areas of a small publishing house. Duties include, but are not limited to editing, manuscript evaluation, data entry, marketing, social media, research, writing, and other miscellaneous tasks.
