What do I get when I order an Islandport story walk?
Islandport story walks come with 16 picture book pages on your choice of material (see options below) and a copy of the book. By purchasing your story walk directly from Islandport you also get permission to use the story walk and book for your community event and story times without copyright issues.
What materials are the story walks made of?
In an exciting update, Islandport story walks are now better than ever with new and improved materials! Our story walks can be ordered in two ways:
Synthetic pages: Made of a tearproof, weatherproof plastic, synthetic pages are 14mil in thickness (think cardstock) and are ready to be taped or velcroed directly to walls, onto yard stakes or inserted into semi-permanent or permanent story walk display cases. Each page is 11-inches by 17-inches with 16 total pages. Synthetic pages do not come with mounting materials, but a google search for “story walk” will show you a wealth of options and ideas for displaying. Synthetic pages are comparable to our previously offered laminated story walks but offer more durability.
Cost: $175.00 + shipping*
Coroplast with stakes: A story walk, ready to go! Coroplast is a thick, corrugated plastic that is weather-proof and sturdy. Each of the 16 pages is 18-inches by 12-inches and is about the same thickness as sturdy cardboard. The Coroplast story walks come with 16 metal H-stakes making the pages ready to display. With the H-Stake, these story walks stand approximately 36 inches high— just the right height for young readers! Keep in mind that H-stakes do require a soft surface like dirt or sand to be pushed into and won’t work with pavement or packed gravel.
Cost: $275.00 + shipping*
*Maine state sales tax will be added if applicable.
How do I keep my story walk safe?
Both our synthetic and Coroplast pages are designed to be water and weather resistant. Depending on how securely they are mounted, they will safely endure direct sun, mild rain, and light snow or wind. Be aware that stronger weather or long periods of being outdoors will likely cause wear and tear so plan accordingly.
Unfortunately, our story walks are not resistant to vandalism. We recommend displaying your story walk in public, well-traveled, and well-lit places. You may also consider bringing your pages in at night.
If pages do become damaged or go missing, single replacement pages can be purchased.
