What is a Story Walk?
Purchase a story walk for indoor or outdoor use and the narratives of our
award-winning books become a kinesthetic literacy adventure. Islandport Press
story walks have been planted and posted in library gardens, parks, trails,
schools, and other public spaces.
into 11-inch by 17-inch spreads and printed on heavy card stock. They are
ready to mount on posts, display cases, or walls, and arrive with one extra
copy of the book.
Q: Do I have to get permission to use the books in my school, park, or other space?
A: When you purchase your story walk directly from Islandport Press, you don’t have
to worry about copyright issues.
Q: Do you sell the mounting materials?
A: We do not sell mounting materials. There are many ways to mount your story walk both inside and out. Some people have more permanent, weatherproof display cases, others use engineering stakes with industrial velcro, and some use paper or “Coroplast” campaign signs that sandwich metal wickets. Each comes with its own budget requirements. A search of Google images for “story walk” will give you a wealth of options. Also note that permanent building materials and even a load of engineering stakes can be quite heavy. Plenty of volunteers, a cart, or a utility vehicle are useful.
Q: How far apart should my story pages be?
A: You want the next page to be visible from the one before. There should be about 40 kid-sized paces between the pages. Be aware of foliage, landmarks, or geography that might obstruct sight lines or other trails that might lead people away from the story walk. Use laminated arrows to keep people on track and number the story stations so the story order is clear.
Past clients have created extra signs that say “Story Walk Start” and “Story Walk End” as well as laminated large arrows to guide people to and through the walk.
Q: What else will I need to have a successful story walk?
A: The saying “If you build it, they will come,” should really be “If you build it, and tell enough people, they will come.” When planning a community story walk, it’s great to partner with an established community entity such as a school or town. Consider press communication, social networking, event planning, and volunteer coordination.
Q: How do I keep my story walk safe?
A: If the story walk is going to stay up for a couple of days, weeks, or longer, be aware of vandalism. A location that is public, well-traveled, and well-lit in the evening is probably more safe. For the longevity of your investment, consider a mounting system that protects the pages from being ripped or defaced, or choose a mounting system that can be brought inside when necessary.
