Summer Internship

Islandport Press, an award-winning Maine-based independent publisher, is pleased to announce our 2026 Summer Internship Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for a college student, career changer, or early-career publishing professional to gain hands-on experience at a small independent press, benefit from experienced mentorship, and learn the basic mechanics of book publishing.

We plan to select two interns for this year’s program: one focusing on Adult Fiction & Nonfiction, the other focusing on Children’s Literature.

This is a paid internship position at $15.10 per hour, for 10 hours per week. The program will run approximately 12 weeks, from June 1 to August 14. Days and work hours are flexible, though they must fall within standard business hours (Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). There may also be opportunities to join staff for after-hours events and festivals, though participation in these is optional.

Applicants must reside in the state of Maine. Since the internship is primarily remote, applicants must have their own computer with reliable internet access and a webcam, as well as access to a distraction-free workspace.

The selected interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Work directly with the staff on tasks such as:

    • title metadata creation

    • social media asset creation

    • writing copy for newsletters

    • website updates

    • media mailings

    • award and review submissions

    • event planning

  • Read and review manuscript submissions, and write response letters

  • Attend weekly staff meetings

  • Participate in distributor sales conferences and industry events

The staff at Islandport Press is committed to fostering a warm, collaborative environment that supports a diversity of identities, opinions, tastes, and ideas.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A desire to pursue a career in book publishing

  • A passion for literature across genres and knowledge of the current market

  • A personable disposition and strong communication skills

  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn about all aspects of the publishing business

  • A meaningful connection to Maine or New England

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, May 1. Finalists will be interviewed during the week of May 11, and the selected candidate will be announced the week of May 18.
