Discover Maine's most enchanting reading spots through the eyes of 50 fellow book lovers in this large-format photographic celebration that captures the joy, wonder, and benefits of reading.

From Governor Janet Mills and Senator Angus King to teachers, firefighters, and college students, Where Maine Reads showcases Mainers of all ages and backgrounds in their perfect reading nooks—porches, boats, hammocks, bars, and yes, even bathtubs. Acclaimed authors like Richard Russo, Monica Wood, and Lily King appear alongside everyday readers, because the love of a cozy reading spot unites us all.

Each portrait tells a story of connection between reader and book, person and place. You'll find yourself nodding along, remembering your own favorite reading corners, and perhaps discovering inspiration for new ones. As Stephen King wrote, "I have a favorite place [to read] and probably you do too—a place where the light is good and the vibe is usually strong."

Where Maine Reads features both stunning photography and personal essays that reveal why these special places matter so much to readers. Created by photographer Buddy Doyle in partnership with Maine Public, this joyful collection is more than a coffee table book—it's a love letter to the simple pleasure of getting lost in a good story, wherever you find your perfect spot.

Proceeds support Maine Public's statewide literacy programs, making every purchase a contribution to Maine's reading community.

  • Buddy Doyle left California in 1999 to reunite with his high school sweetheart after 35 years apart. Their story inspired his not yet published memoir Musical Chairs, in which he reflects on finally finding both a seat and someone to share it with in Maine.

During his West Coast years, Doyle worked in advertising and design, copywriting, and photography. His career took him across diverse industries—from tourism and finance to food packaging, theater, and Hollywood projects ranging from mainstream to decidedly unconventional. Along the way, he had the privilege of meeting legends like Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz, and picked up countless stories (and bar tabs) from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Doyle describes his creative interests as being "all over the lots," and it's in those various lots where he's encountered the fascinating people who inspire his work. Today, he lives on a three-quarter-acre property in Gardiner, Maine, with his wife Geri and their equally fascinating Golden doodle, Riley.

He is the author of Where Maine Reads, published in 2024, with the sequel Maine's Still Reading forthcoming from Islandport Press in 2026. You can find him and his work at Buddy Doyle Creative: https://buddydoyle.com
